Equality Radio LIVE aired weekdays at 3pm Pacific.

This LIVE radio program with video simulcast was the creation of journalist and equal rights advocate Randol White, and featured the very latest news, trends, and opinions affecting the LGBT community. It’s live format allowed for up-to-the-minute conversations with the day’s news makers, as well as audience interaction via phone (42-42-RANDOL), Twitter, Facebook, email, and the QTalk America Chat Room. In addition to news and opinions, the program also highlighted weekly health and leisure topics.

In the early 2000s, Randol was among some of the first openly gay broadcast news anchors in the U.S. and—as an anchor on a chatty and popular morning news show—was proud to share his life publicly with viewers in the Madison, Wis. area.

In October 2006, Randol chose not renew his anchor contact with then employer WMTV NBC 15. While there were several factors affecting this decision, two of those were lgbt equality-related. The station’s Atlanta-based parent company refused to include a requested domestic partner benefits package (no different than the package offered married couples) as part of a new three-year contract extension. Management at the local station showed terrific support for Randol’s position on this issue, but could not override the corporate office. At the same time, the Wisconsin political scene was heating up tremendously over a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman. Polls indicated passage, and that’s exactly what happened that November.

After returning to his homestate of California for another morning anchor job, Randol broke ground again when he got married just days before the passage of California’s Proposition 8 in November of 2008. Upon his return to work on Monday, November 6, 2008, he became the first* broadcast journalist in the nation to publicly list a same-sex spouse on a broadcast station’s website (KCOY CBS 12 in Santa Barbara/Santa Maria/San Luis Obispo, Calif.) bio page. This was indeed a courageous act, considering the heated political debate that surrounded the Prop. 8 initiative, and the station’s broadcast footprint representing a relatively conservative stretch of the California coast.

In May 2011, Randol left the television newsroom to start his own media company, Eat Drink Explore Media with a broadcast studio equipped to deliver radio and video content to stations nationwide. Equality Radio was born out of desire for more readily available (and free to the listener) talkshow programming focused on the latest lgbt news, trends, and politics.

Equality Radio is produced by Eat Drink Explore Media on California’s Central Coast, about half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The show’s focus however is national and international.

Equality Radio partnered with QTalk America for live video and audio distribution.

*If you know of a television news anchor who listed a married same-sex spouse on their station’s bio page prior to November 6, 2008—please let Randol know. It’s entirely possible that he was not the first to do so.
