Joe and Babe #62: Get Fresh with one n ten (1n10)

Joe and Babe LIVEJoe and Babe go way back, and one n ten (1n10) had brought us together originally.  We’re proud to be supporters of one n ten as it charges forward to continue its awesome and much-needed work to empower today’s LGBTQ youth in metropolitan Phoenix.

Jeremy Schachter joins us today to talk about the upcoming one n ten Fresh Brunch at The Phoenician on Sunday, February 26th.  He’s the chair of the Brunch and he’s got the full scoop on the event.  He’s on a mission to raise $100,000 for the organization through the Brunch, and he wants you to help him by buying tickets!

one n tenWe also talk about one n ten as an organization, where it’s been and where it’s going.  Did you know that the YEP House (Youth Empowerment Project) is shortly moving to a brand-new location?  And that one n ten might even be opening a school?  How cool is that?!  We’re super-excited to see the great changes that continue at one n ten, and look forward to the future.

We were saddened by the recent teen suicide in Tennessee, and horrified by the statements made by Tennessee lawmakers afterward.  It is just irresponsible for public figures to make statements such that “gays are not healthy human beings” or that “only gay men can get HIV”.  In these times, the work that one n ten does is more important than ever.

Get tickets for the one n ten Fresh Brunch for yourself and your friends, or you can even sponsor a one n ten youth to attend the Brunch!  For more information on one n ten and to check out their brand-new website, just click here!

Joe and Babe #61: A New You in 2012!

Joe and Babe LIVEIt’s time for a whole new you!  We were expecting to have Chris from Tangible Tanning and Fitness, but we have to fly solo so we improvise!

What is it about fitness as a new year’s resolution?  And why do we often fail at accomplishing what we want with our fitness routines?  Could you be trying to over-do it?  Sometimes we set our goals too high.  But perhaps it’s about feeling comfortable with the body that we’re already in.

And speaking of fitness, we talk about the Two gay swimmers are among oldest Olympic trial qualifiers ever …

We also reflect on the tragedy from this past week that left two of our community, Savannah Stevens and Wes Eichsteadt, severely injured after an attack.  Our thoughts are with them as they recover.

Catch us LIVE every Saturday at 1pm MST!

Joe and Babe #60: 1VCC Men’s Discussion Group, another gay teen suicide and Martin Luther King Day

Joe and Babe LIVELarry Pfeiffer joins us from the Men’s Discussion Group at One Voice Community Center.  One question that’s been burning in our minds: just what do you discuss at a Men’s Discussion Group?  Well, yes, there are some topics that apparently are off-limits, but it’s a very popular group on Monday nights at the Center and just keeps on getting better.

One Voice Community CenterThis week, we lost another gay teen to suicide.  Eric James Borges from California took his life this week after struggling with his coming out process and his family’s non-acceptance of him.  What’s terribly sad about this is that he had a wonderful community full of support around him, and he even made an “It Gets Better” video just about a month ago.  Anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts and have no one to turn to for help, please call The Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.

One of our very own, local GLSEN co-chair and ASU professor Madelaine Adelman, was honored on Friday with the Living the Dream Award at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Awards Breakfast.  It’s great to see the award go to someone who is doing great work to advance civil rights through non-violence.

More stories and local news on the show, plus A Bit O’ Babe — reflecting on Martin Luther King Day.

The Big Gay Wine TrainNathan brings us a great interview with Mark Vogler from Out in the Vineyard about the upcoming The Big Gay Train that is calling ‘All Board!’ in March!  They invite you to join them for their exclusive ALL GAY Winemaker Dinner aboard the world famous Napa Valley Wine Train!  The event officially goes on Saturday, March 31: Enjoy an elegant, perfectly paired, five-course dinner in old world luxury, from Acclaimed Chef Kelly Macdonald.  Looking for more wine-related gay fun?  Check out their Gay Wine Weekend, June 15-17 in Sonoma Valley.

Claudine tells about the amazing experience that she had when she recently checked out Rice Paper, a relatively new Vietnamese restaurant in Central Phoenix.  This new gem has amazing Pho and also specializes in their rolls, which are made with a very thin wrapper (hence the Rice Paper name) which makes them somewhere in-between an egg roll and traditional sushi rolls.  Definitely put it on your list!

Girl Meets ForkJoe dishes about how he just came back from stuffing himself silly at Girl Meets Fork’s Pancake Quest 2012 — an ultimate showdown of eight local chefs vying for the honor of the best pancake in town.  I especially liked those from Orange Table, Smart Kitchen and Elemental Sugar.  If you’re curious about their pancakes from those three, here they are: Buttermilk pancake with fresh ricotta and prosciutto, Meyer lemon butter, ground cherry maple syrup; cream cheese-infused, reduced port wine pancake with fresh raspberry coolie; and grain-free, gluten-free pancake with mesquite flour, pochi berry with chai-infused butter. The event was hosted by Perk Eatery, who put out some pretty amazing spiced sweet potato pancakes with a praline bacon crumble and whiskey bourbon sauce.  An incredible event, to be sure!

Girl Meets Fork is run by foodie and PR gal Susie Timm and is a boutique marketing firm for the restaurant and specialty food industries.  She blogs on her site about food and loves to organize food-related events.  Check out her next event: The 2nd Annual Grilled Cheese Throwdown February 26 at the Hotel Valley Ho.

Last but not least!  Check out this month’s Places, Spaces and Faces Community Dinner on Saturday, January 21st from 6-9pm, at Kitchen Sink Studios in Downtown Phoenix.  PSF is a giant community ‘potluck’ dinner and features a different theme every month and brings the community together for a totally fun night!  Meet new people and discover foods and recipes that you may have never heard of!  Click this link for the official Facebook event.
