Ye Olde Fabulous Middle Ages

Ye Olde Fabulous Middle AgesThis week we’re taking a trip to the past.  To a simpler time, without the Internet, electricity, flu shots and many of our modern conveniences.  Ritchyrd Handley is one of our own and has spent a good portion of his life ‘playing’ in the SCA.  What’s that, you ask?  The Society for Creative Anachronism is a worldwide educational organization that re-creates the Middle Ages — the way they were ‘supposed to be’.  History buffs and non-history buffs alike, it’s filled with a wide range of people who both create and attend regular events with different themes but all based in an era from so long ago.  And, this isn’t a Renaissance Festival either.  The people at the events create the entertainment themselves and become the events that they participate in.  The SCA is a whole new experience for people who want to get away from our daily lives on Facebook and being connected 24×7.  It’s a way to slow down and connect with people, share ideas, learn historical arts and sciences, practice combat of the middle ages and renaissance era and most importantly…….have fun!

As a first for QTalk Arizona, I’m actually interviewing my own boyfriend!  I was introduced to the SCA very quickly since Ritchyrd is so involved in many aspects of it.  I eventually decided to become a member myself because I found the experience so fascinating, met some awesome new friends and had a lot of fun.

Here are some helpful links that we mentioned on the show to help you find out more information on the SCA and your local group:

To contact Ritchyrd in the SCA, look him up under Ritchyrd McUath, which is his chosen name in the society.
